Referrals and Medicare
To qualify for Medicare Rebates your GP will need to write a referral and complete a Mental Health Treatment Plan for you. Provided these are valid, Medicare will partially rebate 10 sessions per calendar year to help reduce the cost of treatment. If circumstances are considered exceptional, such as chronic mental illness, an additional 5 sessions may be accessed.
Private Health Fund Rebates
Depending on your fund and level of private health care cover, you may also be eligible for a partial rebate covering a portion of the sessions cost.It is up to the individual to check with their fund whether they cover mental health consultations.
You can’t claim from both Medicare and your health fund for the same consultation.
Rebates from health funds do not require a GP referral.
